he average Adult will spend an average of 25-27 years of their lifetime sleeping. This shows the enormous dependence our body places on sleep increasingly losing out to the distraction of a modern life. More and more people are finding it more difficult to turn off the worries of another day and get a full night’s sleep. A lack of sleep can have wide ranging effects. People suffering from insomnia usually have Bleary, bloodshot eyes, moodiness, cranky, and are less able to cope with stress and make decisions. People tend to over eat when tired and suffering from lack of sleep and will reach for high sugar foods to increase their sugar levels and give them a short boost of energy.
Common causes of insomnia can include side effects from medications such as blood pressure and asthma medication. Travelling to different time zones can affect your sleeping patterns as your body needs to adjust when returning to normal time. Stressful situations including grief, work conflicts, anxiety, hormonal imbalances can affect your sleeping. Sleeping habits caused by things like raising young children who wake in the night, not having a peaceful sleeping environment and taking naps during the day can also upset your sleep patterns. People who do shift work often have sleeping problems because the body needs to adjust. Of course there is also the problem of drinking coffee and other caffeinated drinks too late in the day and high nicotine will kill a good night’s sleep. Short term sleeplessness can last from a few nights to a few weeks. It usually arises from an event that causes worry anxiety or excitement.
There are some natural plant extracts that can assist you to get a better night’s sleep. These include Zizyphus from the red date and have been used in traditional Chinese medicine to reduce restlessness and help sleep. A new natural ingredient called Lactium has just been made available and it helps to alleviate stress. So lets take a look at snoring. During normal breathing, air passes through the throat on its way to the lungs. The air travels past the soft palate, uvula, tonsils, and tongue. When a person is awake, the muscles in the back of the throat tighten to hold these structures in place preventing them from collapsing into the airway. During sleep, these structures can fall into the airway causing snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea is characterized by loud snoring and disturbed or interrupted sleep patterns. Sleep apnoea can have serious consequences including cardiac problems. Frequently patients will awaken in the morning with a headache. If they become sleep deprived they may feel sleepy all day, and may fall asleep while driving in the car.
Sleep apnea is diagnosed by a sleep study. During a sleep study, the patient’s breathing patterns, heart rhythm and brain waves are monitored.
